The Rebels completed the 2016 regular season with a record of 19-3, finishing is sole possession of second place in the Kauai Seniors Softball League. The team earned a place in Division “B” of the Hawaii State Tournament, which was hosted on Kauai this year.
The Rebels were the defending State Champions of Division “B”, and played all tournament games at Kato Field (also known as Field “B”) in Hanapepe. Six of the eight divisions played in Hanapepe, so there was a lot of excitement – not to mention a lot of players and fans attending the three-day event representing over 65 teams from across the state.
Opening Ceremonies were held on August 2 at Hanapepe Stadium. Local dignitaries – including Kauai Mayor Carvalho, State Senators and Representatives as well as several members of the Kauai County Council – welcomed over 1,000 players representing a total of 64 teams from across the state.
The Rebels opened their State Division “B” slate by sweeping a double header on the Tournament’s first day. The Rebels defeated Onipa’a by a score of 11-2 and followed that victory with a strong effort against the Junk Yard Dogs, downing the Big Island team by a final score of 19-5.
The Rebels concluded their second day of play with a convincing win over Oahu’s Action team by a score of 12-5. The win completed a Rebel sweep of the opponents in their bracket and set up a titanic battle with the Big Island’s Honomu Rockets for the State Championship of Division “B.”
The Rebels broke out to an 8-5 lead in the Championship game, but ultimately lost a hard-fought game to the Honomu Rockets by a final score of 16-8. The Rockets thwarted a number of Rebel rallies with excellent defensive plays in the outfield that stranded a number of key Rebel runners in scoring position.
