A “Break of Dawn” game faced the Rebels and the perennial A Bracket bruisers Bad Company was waiting on their home field. For the third game in a row the Rebels came up visitors in the coin toss. As the sun came up the bad boys of Oahu ran through the Rebel line-up the first time without giving up a run. At the same time they slammed out 5 runs in the first and 4 in the second to go into the third inning up 9 to nothing.
The Rebels turned things around in the third and fourth innings putting up 5 runs in each while checking Bad Company to one, tying up the game and lighting up the scoreboard at 10-all headed into the late innings.
The Rebels came up with two runs on Mark Koehler’s second of three hits in the game. Clay Carvalho and Kit Alderete came up with back to back hits to score one run and a sacrifice fly by Larry Rego brought in two runs in the top of the 5th. But Bad Company answered with 5 runs using a three-run homerun and a two-run home run to take the lead.
A Ray Gordon lead-off double and two singles and a sacrifice fly by Russ McCluskey registered two more runs. Bad Company responded by pounding out another 5 on a home run and six straight singles to go up 20 to 14 with one inning remaining.
Clay Carvalho led off with a triple and scored on Kit Alderete’s RBI single to open the 7th. A wicked line drive was speared by the third baseman for the first out but Myles Yoshida was able to bash another one past the corner to put a couple of Rebels on board. The Rebels went to the bench with a pinch hitter and got a fly ball to left for the second out holding the runners in place. The pitcher then deflected a scorcher right back to the box for a quick third out and an end to the game.
Yoshida, uncharacteristically, suffered his second loss in two days but had the honor of facing one of the toughest teams in the State. While outhitting Bad Company 25 to 20 the Rebels fell to a powerhouse with loaded bats. Clay Carvalho and Kit Alderete led the charge going 4 for 4. Alderete drilled a home run and Carvalho continued to pound the ball with a fence busting triple. J Robertson also added 4 hits in the game in 5 at bats. Mark Koehler and Myles Yoshida contributed to the hitting streak helping with 3 for 4 performances at the plate. Russ McCluskey and Ray Gordon also had multiple hits, each going 2-3.
