(Bryan J. Baptiste Sports Complex, Kapaa) The story you are about to read is heartbreakingly sad – short and sad. But what can you say? This is a story of dirty lickin’s and butt kickin’s.
A beautiful Saturday at the park was spoiled when the Ohana Motors Rebels got crushed by the Keonimana Gents 20 to 1 in a short 5 inning game at the Bryan J. Baptiste Sports Complex. The Rebels fell to their third loss of the season and struggled mightily at the plate, picking up only 6 hits in the game. The pitching got pummeled for 24 hits with 7 extra base hits including two homeruns (a grand slam and a 3 run bomb), 4 doubles and a triple.
Gary Yates got off to a rocky start and gave way to Myles Yoshida after two innings. They were both touched for 10 runs in their stints. The Rebels surrendered five run innings in the first, second and fifth. Keonimana added another five over the third and fourth innings.
On the limited bright side, Myles Yoshida tagged Gent’s starting pitcher Wayne Laranio for two hits in two at bats. J Robertson was two for three and Russ McCluskey and Gary Yates added solo knocks for the grand total of six singles. The remainder of the line-up was blanked.
The Rebels lone run came in the bottom of the third. Yoshida led off the inning ripping his second single past shortstop. The Rebels welcomed the surprise return to the line-up of Harry Best, who came in to man left field. The left fielder moved Yoshida to second base on a ground out to the right side. Robertson connected on his second hit of the game with an RBI grounder up the middle that brought home Yoshida.
Yates (5-1) was tagged with the loss and suffered his first defeat of the year. The right-hander shared the damage with Yoshida, as each gave up 12 hits and 10 runs apiece.
The Rebels will try to get back on the winning track as they venture home to the friendly confines of Rebels Park at the Ohana Motors Stadium. The sculptured Gardens of Puhi awaits an always exciting game with the Rookies. The contest is posted for day-break with the first pitch lofted bright and early at 9am. The first 10,000 paid attendees will receive a commemorative photo of the original Outlaws Softball team signed by all the members of the Rebels who starred on that legendary squad.

Rebelicious Culinary Corner
After the game, the Rebels retired to the sports pavilion in right field to enjoy a gourmet BBQ expertly manned by the McCluskey brothers that included hot dogs, sausage, cheeseburgers, pickles, California rolls, pasta salad, chili, saimin salad, zucchini pizza casserole, crudités, macaroni salad, spinach dip, brownies, cheesecake, coconut pie, Karen’s Banana Creme Pie… and wine to drown the many sorrows.
(Note from J: Apparently, for some unknown reason, it seems that leaving the team serving utensils on the counter next to the front door is not acceptable. In my feeble old aged condition and clear lack of recent memory, I accept full blame and responsibility for the error of omission. And for forgetting to bring the stuff. To the incredibly faithful, dedicated, and hard working ladies who back up the Rebels each weekend I hope you will accept my most fervent apology along with a delicious vintage bottle(s) of wine as a memento of my culpability.)
