After the stinging loss in the opener, Coach Yates beefed up the top of the line up with an adjustment in the batting order for the second game pitted against the Onomea Rangers, also from the Big Island. The move paid off with a blow out 31 to 10 victory in a full 7 inning game.
Yates captured the first tournament win with gale force winds howling from left to the right field line. The right hander blanked the Rangers in five of the seven innings holding the normally hard-hitting team to just 16 hits. The Rebels cashed in on 37 hits with 11 extra base hits – 2 home runs, 5 triples and 4 doubles.
Despite running out to a 15 to 5 lead, the Rebels couldn’t come up with the 2 necessary runs to invoke the mercy rule and prevent a Rangers comeback. Onomea rallied for 5 runs to cut the lead to 17 to 10 after four innings. The Rebels banged out 3 more runs in the top of the 5th to make it a 10 run margin – still 2 runs short.
Both sides went scoreless in the 6th leading into the 7th “open” inning still at 20 to 10. In the top of the 7th the Rebels almost batted around twice (4 short) and erupted for 11 runs on 12 hits and left a runner on base to knock out the Rangers 31 to 10. A lead off error in the bottom of the 7th got the Rangers hopes up but Yates got a ground ball and two fly balls to left to put the game to rest.
Stan Dotario, the Tournament Batting Champion was spotless at 1 for 1 and Lambert Alapai unleashed a ferocious attack on the Big Island pitcher with 4 hits including a triple in 4 at bats. Russ McCluskey could not be stopped at the plate pounding out 5 hits with a home run, 2 triples and a double to go with a blistering single. Mark Koehler, Joed McCluskey, J Robertson and Myles Yoshida added 4 hits in 5 at bats. The Rebels came to the plate 52 times ripping 37 hits with 4 walks. Every man in the line-up came through with a hit in the wild contest. Russ McCluskey destroyed the Rangers with 8 RBI’s and 14 total bases. Clay Carvalho cracked a homerun and a double delivering 4 runs batted in.
