(Hanapepe Waterfront Park Field B) The Rebels completed a doubleheader sweep on Day One of the Hawaii State Tournament by clobbering the Big Island’s Junk Yard Dogs by a final score of 19-5.
Myles Yoshida took the mound and kept the power-hitting JYD off-balance all day long. Known for the prodigious power in the middle of their line-up, the Dogs had very few extra base hits and could muster only a single harmless home run. Yoshida – backed by a solid all-around defensive effort – scattered 16 hits over 7 innings of work, and held a high-scoring opponent to only five runs.
The game was a re-match for two teams that battled through a tense contest in last year’s State Tournament, which the Rebels took in a last-inning come-from-behind victory. This game started as a low-scoring, tight contest through the first three innings, with the Rebels clutching precariously to a slim 1-0 lead. The Rebels’ bats came to life on the top of the fourth with a max five-run explosion that opened a 6-0 lead. The Dogs inched closer with single runs in the fourth and fifth innings to close the gap to 6-2. The teams then traded two-run spots in the sixth to reach the “open” seventh inning with the Rebels holding a lead of 8-4.
The seventh inning spelled doom for the JYD as the Rebels batted around twice and plated 11 runs to blow the game wide open. The resulting 19-4 advantage was far too high a mountain for the Dogs to climb, and they could only scratch out a single run in the bottom of the seventh inning as the game came to a close.
The Rebels’ 26-hit attack was keyed by two perfect games at the plate, Lambert Alapai’s 4-4 and Gary Yates’ 3-3. Russ McCluskey, Joed McCluskey, and Larry Rego all went 3-4, and three other Rebels had multi-hit games. The Rebels pounded two more home runs (by Russ and Clay Carvalho), and six Rebels batters connected for doubles to thoroughly dent the outfield walls and cause many opposing outfielders to ask for oxygen after the game.
