The Rebels, assigned home team for the first time in two days, rallied to take the final contest of the Round Robin 17-16 over Ku’ikahi – the third opponent from the Big Island. Right handed fireballer Gary Yates notched his second win without a loss in the opening contests.
Both sides traded 5’s to start the game. Then Ku’ikahi forged a lead with a lone run and another 5 run inning in the third for an 11 to 5 margin. The Rebels fought back with 3 runs in the bottom of the third and a big 5 in the forth to tie the game at 13 all with no time left on the tournament clock. The umpire declared that the 5th inning would be the “open” and final inning of the game and the table was set for an exciting finish.
Ku’ikahi, the team with the best season record on the Big Island at 27-8, brought their best to the plate in the top of the fifth all with two outs. Yates got two quick outs with ground balls to shortstop and third. And somewhere a spark went off in Ku’ikahi as they suddenly broke out with back-to-back singles followed by a double to left center and the rally was on. A walk and two more hits brought in a total of 3 runs giving the visiting team a 16 to 13 lead and three outs from a big win.
There was no quit in this match up. The Rebels had been blasting the ball all game, and Larry Rego got it going with a blistering single past the third baseman. Myles Yoshida drilled a line drive in the hole between third and short to put two aboard and bring the tying run to the plate. J Robertson drove a shot into the gap in right center to score one run, pushing Yoshida to third and putting the tying run aboard with no outs. A fielder’s choice at second allowed another run to score and keep the equalizer on base. Russ McCluskey settled into an outside fastball and roped a single into left to put a pair on. Mark Koehler continued the hot streak with another single to load the bases. Alapai at third, McCluskey at second and Koehler at first – McCluskey is now the winning run. First baseman Joed McCluskey kept the heat on with an RBI game-tying single and the game was knotted at 16 all. Clay Carvalho delivered a walk off laser into center field scoring Russ McCluskey and securing the 17 to 16 win.
Mark Koehler was once again perfect at the plate with a 4 for 4 performance including a home run and double. Joed McCluskey was 2 for 2 with 2 walks. J Robertson, Russ McCluskey and Clay Carvalho cashed in on 3 for 4 trips to the batter’s box.
