(Hanapepe Waterfront Park Field B) The Rebels launched the defense of their State Division “B” title by walloping the Big Island’s Onopa’a team by a final score of 12-2.
Righthander Gary Yates picked right up where he left off in the regular season, shutting down the opponent’s offense throughout the contest. Onipa’a could only manage 11 hits and a mere two runs over seven innings, scoring one in the first and another singleton in the sixth inning.
After being blanked in the first inning, the Rebels scored eight runs over the next three to take control of the contest. The Rebels added four more runs in the sixth to extend their lead to a commanding 12-1 score before surrendering one additional run in the bottom of the frame.
There were many hitting stars for the Rebels in this contest. Eight Rebels had multi-hit games, including spotless hitting performances by J Robertson (4-4) and Larry Rego (3-3). Russell McCluskey also had three hits in four at-bats.
The Rebels also flexed their considerable muscles with two home runs by Russ McCluskey and Mark “Babe” Koehler – whose mammoth shot through a stiff breeze easily cleared the wall in left field. Joed McCluskey contributed a booming triple, and both Koehler and Clay Carvalho smashed doubles to send outfielders scurrying for cover.
