(Hanapepe Waterfront Park Field B) The Rebels kept their record perfect at the 2016 Hawaii State Tournament by downing Oahu’s tenacious Action squad by a score of 12-5. The game was a re-match of last year’s Division “B” State Championship title game, and completed a sweep of their tournament bracket with a 3-0 record.
After a scoreless first inning for both teams, The Rebels exploded for five runs in the bottom of the second to draw first blood and put immediate pressure on the Action offense to answer back. However, righthander Gary Yates had other plans for the Action hitters.
Yates – using his entire repertoire of back-door sliders, slurves, knuckle-curves, split-finger fastballs and change-ups – bewildered batter after batter as he plowed through the Action lineup. Bolstered by a superlative defense and cannon-like outfield arms, the Rebel hurler kept the vaunted Oahu team off the scoreboard through five innings. This allowed the Rebels to build their lead to 9-0 after scoring an additional four runs in the third inning, and hold that advantage through five full innings.
The Action bats came alive in the top of the sixth inning, plating the maximum five runs – three of which scored after two outs were recorded. Undaunted, the Rebels offense immediately responded with three runs of their own, building the final 12-5 margin. Yates quickly set down the Action batters 1-2-3 in the top of the seventh inning to seal the victory and a trip to the Championship Game.
Eight Rebels hitters had a multiple-hits in the game, led by perfect 4-4 marks by Lambert Alapai, Mark Koehler and Tom Christy. Russ McCluskey and Yates chipped in with three hits each. Christy boomed a long triple and a big double, with J Robertson also banging a timely double.
The win advances the Rebels to the State Division “B” Championship game against the Honomu Rockets, a perennial powerhouse hailing from the Big Island. The matchup between two undefeated teams is scheduled for a 12:15 start on Thursday, and is certain to be one of the most popular games of the afternoon.
